BIM6D develops an urban digital twin pilot to support Pamplona’s strategic planning, integrating digital models, urban analysis, 3D visualisation, and indicators for proximity, sustainability, and climate resilience.

SMART CITY PAMPLONA: URBAN DIGITAL TWIN FOR THE CITY OF THE FUTURE

Year: 2025-2026  |  Client / promoter: Pamplona / Iruña City Council and the Government of Navarra.
Firms: BIM6D

PROJECT OVERVIEW

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

Pamplona faces the challenge of moving towards a more sustainable and inclusive urban model, one that is prepared for the climate and social challenges of the twenty-first century.

Planning the city of the future requires new tools capable of bringing together territory, mobility, public space, nature, and quality of life. It is no longer simply about representing the city, but about understanding how urban decisions influence proximity, accessibility, comfort, and the resilience of neighbourhoods.

In this context, BIM6D has developed an urban digital twin pilot that makes it possible to visualise and compare planning alternatives, integrating spatial information and key indicators to support more anticipatory and evidence-based decision-making.

TOWARDS AN OPERATIONAL URBAN DIGITAL TWIN

The urban digital twin developed for Pamplona enables a shift from descriptive planning to an operational environment for comparative analysis.

The solution connects digital models, urban information, BIM-GIS analysis, and interactive reports to facilitate the comparison of urban design alternatives using consistent criteria.

Its value lies not only in visualising a three-dimensional model, but in linking scenarios, data, and indicators to better understand the impact of urban decisions within their spatial context.

This approach makes it possible to assess alternatives, visualise proposals, and support decision-making from the early stages, incorporating criteria of proximity, sustainability, and climate resilience.

WHAT HAS BEEN DEVELOPED

DIGITAL ENVIRONMENT FOR URBAN ANALYSIS

The project has developed a digital environment to analyse and compare urban scenarios within a pilot area in Pamplona.

Publicly, the scope can be summarised in the following components:

· Generation and comparison of urban alternatives.
· Integration of digital models into a shared analysis environment.
· Three-dimensional visualisation of scenarios.
· Analysis of urban proximity and the 15-minute city.
· Assessment of environmental variables and urban comfort.
· Interactive dashboards for interpreting indicators.
· Structured comparison of urban data.
· Scalable methodological basis for future areas of the city.

The solution has been conceived as a modular and scalable system, capable of evolving towards new neighbourhoods, new planning scenarios, and future layers of urban analysis.

BENEFITS FOR URBAN MANAGEMENT

· Incorporation of environmental and climate resilience criteria.
· Clear visualisation of complex urban scenarios.
· Improved traceability and technical understanding of decisions.
· Reduction of duplicated urban analysis.
· Scalability towards new areas and future Smart City use cases.

In addition, the standardisation of information makes it possible to reuse analysis templates, reduce assessment times and maintain consistency across successive studies.

With this project, BIM6D strengthens its experience in applying digital twins to the territory, helping public administrations transform data and models into real tools for better city planning.
